Exploris Grade 8

Dear Parents,

It is the end of THE RIPPLE EFFECT – this expedition focused on water, chemistry, and the development of the United States and our personal rights.  Your child’s final challenge was to Design a Change that makes our water world better. The students choose their topics, and within their topics, their action.  They worked in “scrums” and selected “scrum leaders.” The students coordinated their own interviews, kept track of each others’ action items, and brought an idea through …some to a finish!

Please join us for their thoughtful presentations on their learning and execution of their ideas on Wednesday, November 14.

10:50-11:20 Can we save NC from flooding? (Shannon’s Teams)

11:20-11:50 How can hog waste be eliminated from our streams? (Adrian’s Teams)

11:50-12:30 LUNCH (Feel free to join your child at Morgan Street Food Hall.)

12:30-1:00  Can biotechnology protect water quality? (Cori’s Teams)

1:00-1:30 Can we achieve plastic-free waterways? (Jessie’s Teams)

Exploris Soccer- Please go to the following link for more information about our winter indoor soccer program.  We look forward to continuing our tradition of including ALL levels of experience on our Exploris Teams!  There is only one practice – just to get the feel of indoor soccer, Tuesday, December 18, 4-5pm. Then just weekly games. All of our  11/12 and 13/14 games will on Sunday afternoons! Hopefully this does not interfere with travel players. This is not a developmental program.  There are NO TRYOUTS!  We have elite players and beginners.    We promise you all skill levels are welcomed, including zero experience.  Effort and smiles are the only expectation! This program is about fitness, fun, laughter, sweat, play, leadership, compassion, and teamwork!  Competition is important, and the students know the teams are carefully designed to tie one another.  WHERE? Philip’s Question of the Week #6 –  Do You Think 8th Grade Is Doing A Good Job Preparing You For High School?

20181107_130521

Philip’s Week 4 Results

The week #4 question was If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Here are the answers. Interestingly, this wasn’t multiple choice, yet 11 people said their one superpower would be to the power to have any superpower. You guys just love finding loop-holes in my questions, don’t you? 5 people responded in absolute gibberish (thanks a lot trolls), but the rest of them were very enjoyable. I particularly liked the ones about shape-shifting.

Philip’s Week 5 Results

The 5th question of the week was “What do you think of Star Wars?” Link to responses. I tried to include a wide variety of options, but I stupidly included I Love You Philip as one of the choices. Naturally, 68% chose that. 16% said they like it well enough, which is kinda surprising. 8% said they love it with all their heart, which is even more surprising. 4% said the Last Jedi ruined it for them, and 4% said they didn’t know what Star Wars is. OK, moving on to question #6.

Service Project (DONATIONS) Hello! My name is Lucinda and I am in the 7th-grade service learning group called  Conservationists.  We are in need of WOOD to create owl boxes for Eastern Screech Owls. We need unpainted wood (NOT Presswood or plywood) that is 3/4 -1 inch thick and at least 10 inches wide (3/4 to 1″ X 10″) and as long as possible. Pine would be fine or cedar scraps are good too. If you have wood that you can drop off please contact Helene at helliston@exploris.org   We would need this WOOD as soon as possible since we are trying to make OWL BOXES after our Thanksgiving Break.  Thank you so much!7th Grade Conservationists
