Exploris Grade 8

We hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving Break! We are back in the swing of things with Trimester 2 well underway! We kicked off our study of Tipping Points, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the second round of electives. Thank you to Dr. Michael Reiskind for kicking off our trimester with an insightful presentation about Yellow Fever. Dinner table chats this week can include Yellow Fever, The Flu of 1918, similarities/differences between that and Covid-19, the importance of UDHR, and Manifest Destiny! This week’s letter is full of new updates, so please read carefully as we wrap our work for 2021!

Universal Declaration of Human Rights: The class of 2022 invites parents to virtually attend our UDHR ceremony on Friday, December 10 at 9:00 AM. This is a time-honored tradition that every 8th grader at Exploris has taken part in for the past 20 years on the anniversary of the United Nations signing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a wonderful, yearly reminder of the importance of human rights and your students have worked hard to memorize and prepare their part. Zoom Link.

  • Boots – The Holidays are a great time to purchase boots for Outward Bound, so you have time to break them in. If your child is in a serious growth spurt, though, you should wait till about a month out so they are not too small! 🙂
  • Outward Bound Course – Preparation Information This is an official OB page for Exploris.  Their official packing list is posted on this page.  We have found students DO NOT need everything on this list. Our version of the packing list.

  • We have 46 students in the portal, but we need everyone to go ahead and do step 1 to get the process started! Many of you are overdue on Step 2. Please work on getting that paperwork completed, if needed. Crew teachers will reach out in the new year with another payment update and final payment info. The final total of $900 (another $300 payment) is due January 14, 2022 for your planning purposes.
  • Covid Protocols for OB
  • Payment of $600 total is overdue: Either pay online here, send in a check to Exploris, or please go ahead and fill out the Scholarship Application if finances are an issue. We’ve had many families complete theirs already, so go ahead and get those submitted if you need funding. We have a grant and have set aside a robust scholarship fund because we know many families are still recoverying economically from Covid. Do not let money worries keep you from sending your child! You can submit your scholarship application to your crew teacher or directly to Deb Brown, Middle School Director @
  • We are still working on scheduling a parent meeting with Outward Bound.
